Does cracking your knuckles cause arthritis
When I’m getting really stressed or concentrating on something I’ll crack my knuckles without even realising I’m doing it, to which I get told off by Grace lol
People have told me from time to time that cracking my knuckles will give me arthritis while others have told me that it’s a myth so I decided to do a bit of research.
It was considered on a few sites whether there was a trend between knuckle cracking and arthritis of which none was found. It was also considered whether those who cracked their knuckles had looser ligaments which would then result in proneness to joint damage of which the result concluded negative.
Therefor I’m satisfied that the answer to this question “Does cracking your knuckles cause arthritis?” is no and that it was indeed people that found it annoying that started the myth.
What is the cracking noise that comes from your knuckles? Apparently it’s gases (Nitrogen) escaping from between the joints that makes the noise.

Being a lifetime long knuckle cracker I have to say it probably does damage based on my own opinion, however, it is very satisfying when you get a deep and rolling ‘CRACK’ along every knuckle. You know what I mean, Weiry, I know you do.
Comment by mcfox 03.30.06 @ 2:00 pmI love cracking my knuckles and do it all day long. If it annoys someone, they’re welcome to leave the room.
Comment by Colleen 03.31.06 @ 10:26 amHmmmm, I dont think telling Grace to leave the room would go down too well! lol
Comment by weirfire 03.31.06 @ 10:43 amMy old man did a shoot for the NHS years ago about the effects of cracking your knuckles and the effect it has on arthritis.
Basically, without going into detail, cracking your knuckles *does* cause arthritis. Yeah it sucks ~ I do it all the time…
Looking at the rushes from the shoot (Non-Edited footage), you can see all these poor sods who han’t move their fingers and have real messed up looking hands ~ really makes you think..
I crack my neck too - I hope it doesn’t end up looking like this…

More recently I’ve been making a real effort to stop ~ I need my fingers waaaay too much to risk messing them up so bad.
Comment by Ol 04.03.06 @ 1:33 pmWhat about all the other bones, especially the spine?
I visit an osteopath at least once (usually twice) a month, for back treatment. Used to go to a chiropractor, but they just seemed to be after money, and get through as many patients as possible.
Anyway, my neck is usually “cracked” 2-4 times per visit, back about 3-4 times, from different angles.
I hope this is completely different from knuckle cracking!
Comment by Bulbboy 05.02.06 @ 2:08 amMay be it knuckling does help with arthritis but I never tried it.

To investigate the relation of habitual knuckle cracking to hand function 300 consecutive patients aged 45 years or above and without evidence of neuromuscular, inflammatory, or malignant disease were evaluated for the presence of habitual knuckle cracking and hand arthritis/dysfunction. The age and sex distribution of the patients (74 habitual knuckle crackers, 226 non-knuckle crackers) was similar. There was no increased preponderance of arthritis of the hand in either group; however, habitual knuckle crackers were more likely to have hand swelling and lower grip strength. It is concluded that habitual knuckle cracking results in functional hand impairment.

So as we can see, it may not necessarily cause arthritis (although no one is 100% certain), it does however cause other problems.
Ps. Its really horrible to have to listen to it 24hours a day!
